‘Solitaires’ universally most preferred gift by women

Since time immemorial, jewellery has been the most preferred gift for a woman. This holds true for women not only in India but also globally. The immense popularity of jewellery is because of its versatility: it can be gifted on almost any occasion and can also be worn in any event.

A woman, irrespective of any nationality, prefers be gifted an item which carries a strong emotional connect. Jewellery has left behind other aspirational items like I-pads, smart phones, clothes, perfumes, etc. to become the top choice of gifts for women.

It has been found that diamonds are India’s second fastest-growing discretionary purchase, trailing mobile phones, but well ahead of packaged holidays, clothing and electronics. About 90% of India’s affluent women own at least one diamond jewellery, with most receiving their first diamond to celebrate a wedding, engagement, birthday or anniversary.

Jewellery accounts for 35% of the most preferred gits by women, leaving behind other aspirational items such as I-pads, smartphones (10%), clothes, bags and shoes (12.5%), cosmetics and perfumes (10%), money/cash (20%) and holiday trips (12.5%) to become the top choice of gifts for women (as seen above in the pie-chart).

Jignesh Mehta, Managing Director of Divine Solitaires, the first and only loose solitaire brand in India which provides consumers with the world’s finest and perfectly crafted solitaire diamonds in an organised and transparent manner, said, “It is not surprising that jewellery has emerged as the top choice of gifts for women. The inherent nature of a woman, irrespective of nationality, is the same. Jewellery, especially diamond jewellery, has global significance and finds universal acceptance as a gift of high quality and strong emotional connect. This also indicates that demand for solitaires as a gift is high and bodes well for the future.” When it comes to diamond jewellery, women prefer a solitaire diamond as compared to regular diamond jewellery. The solitaire diamonds market has benefited from several new drivers of demand in the past decade. Growing personal incomes and rapid urbanisation has meant that people are increasingly buying solitaire jewellery. There is also a new class of consumers, i.e., rural India, which is increasingly opting for this classy jewellery.

Most solitaire diamond jewellery—roughly 60%—is purchased for “love occasions” such as weddings or engagements, birthdays and anniversaries. However, purchasing a diamond can prove to be a difficult question for many. Consumers have certain criteria while selecting solitaire diamonds such as quality, certificates, designs, service, etc. And Divine Solitaires delivers on all these counts and more!
